Current we only offer this program in a limited number of states where we have certified instructors.

Our EquiAid Emergency First Aid for Horses provides an introductory overview of how to manage common medical emergencies when they happen to horses. 

Classes can be conducted with or without live horses. We collaborate with ranches, stables, and other riding facilities to provide a suitable location for the class, along with 3-4 safe, calm horses for demonstrations and training. Our instructors are experienced horsemen and horsewomen with extensive backgrounds in equine healthcare and veterinary medicine. Facilities interested in hosting a class must offer a comfortable seating area for the lecture portion and an arena or round pen large enough for safe horse handling. Topics Covered:

  • Transporting and Restraining Sick or Injured Horses: Learn safe methods for moving and securing horses that are ill or injured.
  • Preparing an Emergency Plan and First Aid Kit: Develop a robust emergency plan and assemble a complete first aid kit tailored for your farm.
  • Performing Triage and Physical Assessments: Gain skills in prioritizing medical issues and conducting thorough physical assessments, including obtaining vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature.
  • Managing Traumatic Injuries: Understand how to treat wounds and fractures, including cleaning, dressing, and stabilizing injuries.
  • Applying Emergency Splints: Learn techniques for applying emergency splints to support injured limbs.
  • Performing Quick Release Ties and Using Safety Ropes: Master the use of quick release ties and safety ropes for secure and safe horse handling.
  • Essential Supplies in the Equine First Aid Kit: Identify and learn how to use important items in the equine first aid kit.
  • Treating Specific Emergencies: Acquire knowledge on providing first aid for severe bleeding, burns, eye injuries, digestive issues, and handling emergencies that occur on trails or at horse shows.

This course equips you with the essential skills and knowledge to respond effectively to a range of medical emergencies in horses.

Participants will also learn about the critical supplies needed in an equine first aid kit and how to use them, as well as administering first aid for choke, colic, dehydration, severe bleeding, burns, eye injuries, digestive issues, and emergencies occurring on trails or at horse shows. In classes with live horses, each participant will have the opportunity to perform physical exams, obtain vital signs, bandage limbs, and use equipment like hoof testers and stethoscopes. If live horses are unavailable, models will be used for demonstrations.

Registration Fee- $74.95 per person

This course in no way will teach how to administer veterinary care and is an introductory emergency first aid course for horse owners and equine professionals. It is designed to teach how to manage a medical emergency until veterinary care can be ascertained. This class does not cover any advanced veterinary medical content regulated by law and the state veterinary practice act. This includes administering medications to horses and invasive medical procedures that should only be performed by a licensed veterinary professional.

Course participants will receive the following:

  • A copy of our full color EquiAid Reference Guide E-book (printed books may be purchased for an additional $24.95)
  • An Official Certificate (valid for 4 approved CEU)
  • 2 year subscription to the Pet Emergency Education Online Resource Center
  • Copyright access to use the EquiAid logo to promote that you are certified
  • Stables and/or groups can request a framable certificate to hang in their barn, observation room, etc. to show that you are certified.

Hosts receive one complimentary registration for hosting the class  (fundraiser classes excluded).   The minimum number of participants varies depending on the distance for the instructor to travel.  To sign up to host a class simply fill out the request form below.

Please be aware that we only offer this class in person in the states listed above where we have certified instructors. Some states and areas will require a larger minimum number of attendees in order for instructors to travel there.
Please be aware that we have very limited number of certified equine first aid instructors in the US. If we do not have an instructor in your area we do have instructors willing to travel however we will require a larger minimum number of people or increase the registration fee to cover travel costs.
We require a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 25 people for a class session to run. Also we need to have at least one well behaved school horse per 4 people in the class unless your requirements are less then we will follow your policy. We do not allow more than 4 people to work on a horse for safety reasons.
Fundraiser classes do not receive any complimentary host registrations. Charity must be a registered 501(c) charitable organization the IRS and be equine related. Be sure to read our fundraiser class policies before booking a fundraiser class.
Skills taught on horses- vital signs, physical exams, lower limb bandages, hoof testers. All instructional equipment such as stethoscopes, bandages and hoof testers will be provided by the instructor.
If you do not have chairs we can require participants to bring their own. Instructors can bring their own table but they need to be made aware ahead of time that they will need to.

At Pet Emergency Education we hire only the best equine medical professionals to teach our classes. Each instructor is chosen based on their extensive background and experience working in the equine emergency industry and they undergo a comprehensive training with our company to become one of our certified instructors. Our instructors are equine veterinary and health care experts who have spent years teaching equine emergency care, equine first aid, disaster management, and more.  They are veterinary technicians and equine science faculty that have worked hands on with horses in a variety of emergency situations. Our instructors travel to you bringing all of their own equipment and supplies and are all certified by FEMA in Animal Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response.
